The California market
California is the largest aesthetic surgery market in the United States and the most expensive. It also has the widest spread between markets — a quote in Beverly Hills and a quote in San Diego can differ substantially for the same operation, and the difference reflects the address more than the surgery.

Verifying a surgeon in California
Two separate checks, both public, both quick. Do them before the consultation rather than after.
- Licence and standing. Check with the Medical Board of California, including any disciplinary history.
- Certification. In the United States the relevant body for this surgery is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A state licence means someone may practise medicine. It does not mean they are a certified plastic surgeon, and plenty of physicians performing cosmetic procedures hold the first without the second.
California requires outpatient settings where general anaesthesia is administered to be accredited by an approved agency or licensed by the state. Ask which applies to the facility you would be operated in, and confirm it rather than taking the practice website at its word.
Cost and insurance
Coverage depends on why the implants are coming out. Removal for a documented medical reason such as rupture, severe capsular contracture or implant-associated cancer is more often covered than removal for systemic symptoms alone. What to ask
- How many explant procedures with capsulectomy did you perform in the last year?
- Will you remove the entire capsule, and what will you do if it is adherent to my ribs or lung?
- Will the capsule be sent for pathology?
- What is your complication rate, and how do you track it?
- Which accredited facility would I be operated in?
