Verifying a surgeon in Texas

Two separate checks, both public, both quick. Do them before the consultation rather than after.

• Licence and standing. Check with the Texas Medical Board, including any disciplinary history.
• Certification. In the United States the relevant body for this surgery is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A state licence means someone may practise medicine. It does not mean they are a certified plastic surgeon, and plenty of physicians performing cosmetic procedures hold the first without the second.

The Texas Medical Board profile search shows certification, licence status and any board actions in one place, which makes verification here quicker than in most states. Texas also requires facilities performing procedures under general anaesthetic to be licensed or accredited.

Cost and insurance

Coverage depends on why the implants are coming out. Removal for a documented medical reason such as rupture, severe capsular contracture or implant-associated cancer is more often covered than removal for systemic symptoms alone. What to ask

• How many explant procedures with capsulectomy did you perform in the last year?
• Will you remove the entire capsule, and what will you do if it is adherent to my ribs or lung?
• Will the capsule be sent for pathology?
• What is your complication rate, and how do you track it?
• Which accredited facility would I be operated in?
