The Calgary market
Calgary has a well-developed private cosmetic sector for a city its size, and shorter waits than the larger Canadian metros. Search volume here is low enough that the local field is largely unexamined, which cuts both ways — less marketing noise, but also fewer surgeons doing explant with capsulectomy regularly.
Alberta requires non-hospital surgical facilities to be accredited by the CPSA. Ask which accredited facility your procedure would take place in — the CPSA publishes the list.
Is removal covered in Alberta?
AHCIP does not fund cosmetic procedures, but may fund removal where medically necessary, typically rupture or significant capsular contracture. Removal for systemic symptoms alone is generally not funded.
Where a procedure is not funded, the cost is yours. Ask for the quote in writing, and ask specifically what it includes — surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist, facility, pathology and follow-up are sometimes billed separately.
Verified surgeons in Calgary
We publish a surgeon only once we have checked their board certification against the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Albertaand the practice has confirmed the entry. We will not fill this section by copying practice websites — that produces a list of who ranks well, not who operates well.

Do this before the consultation rather than after. It takes a few minutes and it is public information.
- Check licence status and any disciplinary history with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
- Confirm certification separately — in Canada the relevant body for this surgery is the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. A provincial licence means someone may practise medicine; it does not mean they are a certified plastic surgeon.
- Ask how many explant procedures with capsulectomy they performed in the last twelve months. Someone who does this weekly answers immediately.
- Confirm the surgical facility is accredited, and that it is where you will actually be operated on.
